Decisions, Decisions...
Decisions, Decisions...

We all face moments where we seek approval—whether from a colleague, a friend, or even a mentor. It’s part of human nature to want validation, but what happens when seeking approval takes precedence over trusting God and trusting ourselves? The story of the young prophet in 1 Kings 13 serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers of misplaced approval-seeking.

In 1 Kings 13, the young prophet is given a clear, direct instruction from God: "Do not eat or drink in this place" (1 Kings 13:9). However, an older prophet, one he probably respected and looked up to, convinces him to disobey God's command. The young prophet, perhaps desiring the older prophet’s approval or seeing him as a spiritual authority, chooses to follow his advice rather than God’s. This decision leads to dire consequences—he is punished for his disobedience, and his life is lost. The story is sobering, showing how the desire for approval can lead us astray if it overrides God’s guidance.

Here are three takeaways we can apply to our own lives to ensure we aren’t seeking approval for the wrong reasons:

Trust Your Convictions and God’s Word

The young prophet knew what God had told him. But instead of holding firm to that instruction, he allowed the influence of another person to sway him. When we face decisions, it’s crucial to trust in the convictions God has placed in our hearts and the truth of His Word. Our choices need to be grounded in God’s promises, not in the desire for others’ approval.

Evaluate the Source of the Advice

The young prophet didn’t critically assess the source of the older prophet’s advice. The older prophet had a different message than the one God gave the young prophet, but because of his stature, the young prophet listened without question. We need to be discerning about whose voices we listen to, especially when those voices contradict the clear direction we’ve received from God. Not all advice, no matter how well-intentioned, is aligned with God’s will for us.

Guard Against People-Pleasing

Seeking approval is not inherently wrong, but when it becomes our primary motivation, it can lead us astray. The young prophet’s decision shows how people-pleasing can compromise our integrity and cause us to disobey God. Instead of seeking validation from others, we must seek to please God in all things, remembering that His approval is the only one that truly matters.

Reflective Thought:

How often do you look to others for validation before making a decision? In moments of uncertainty, remind yourself that God has equipped you with the wisdom you need. Trust in the guidance He gives, and rest in the knowledge that you are capable of making decisions that honor Him, even when others might not understand.

When we trust God and trust ourselves, we become leaders of our own lives, not swayed by the fleeting approval of others. Let’s walk confidently in our convictions, always remembering that God’s guidance will never lead us astray.

Living Trustfully,

M.
